Netflix Tech Support Scam

Scammers are going to great lengths to get your money, so far that they're setting up fake Netflix call centers to trick customers into thinking hackers have infiltrated their computers.
One of these scams works by making the customer think that they've been locked out of their Netflix account, at which point they're given a number to call. That phone number directs to a fake Netflix call center, answered by a real person, who will  tell the customer that they've been hacked and that the hacker has control of their account. The rep will ask the customer to download "Netflix Support Software," which will actually be software that allows them access into your system and your files.

After switching from a customer service rep to a technician, they'll run another fake program that, to the untrained eye, will look legit. The rep and technician will work to get the customer frightened of having their information and pictures taken by hackers, and by doing so, will make them feel like buying better security is a must, and they'll offer it. After claiming that they secured the computer, they'll ask for a payment—for doing nothing.

The video below is an actual recorded conversation with these scammers, from Jerome Segura, who tracks tech support scams. "By running their own tool, which looks authentic, the crooks can detect 'problems' that do not exist," he told ArsTechnica. "Finally, showing those scan results adds to the fear factor, as well as creating a sense of urgency to fix the issue."

"The Neftlix theme was well thought out—from the suspended account ploy to the discount coupon if you agree to fix the issue, the bad guys have planned their approach in detail," Segura continued. "Requesting a photo ID, as well as a snapshot of my credit card, was completely novel too. Despite being the untrustworthy ones, it is ironic they are trying to make sure the mark is not playing them. Aside from the fact that it is creepy, it creates a huge identity theft risk."

The NSA Is Spying On Us

The internet is aflame with the news that the National Security Agency may be spying on phone calls and internet access of American citizens, and the possibility that they've partnered with some of the biggest tech companies in the world—Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Skype, and others—to request and access data directly whenever they want it. Let's take a look at what exactly is going on, how long it's been happening, and what—if anything—you can do about it.

Defenders of online liberty and generally angry internet people Anonymous have leaked a treasure trove of NSA documents, including seriously important stuff like the US Department of Defense’s ‘Strategic Vision’ for controlling the internet.

The documents — 13 in total — were posted online, along with an accompanying message full of the normal Anonymous bluster: people won’t be silenced, they have the memory of trivia-master elephants, the governments of the world will fall, your average press release really.

The documents seem to mostly relate to PRISM and supporting operations, and mostly date from around
2008, supposedly not long after PRISM first reared its ugly head. One of the key things Anonymous has highlighted from the documents is the existence of an “intelligence-sharing network” that shares data gleaned from PRISM with “intelligence partners” around the world. Although we’re still in the process of combing through the documents, you can bet your last Bitcoin that ‘intelligence’ has been shared with British security services.

James Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, basically confirmed the Washington Post and Guardian report about how the NSA can pry data from Apple, Facebook, Google and whoever else.
Here's what Clapper wrote about PRISM:
The Guardian and The Washington Post articles refer to collection of communications pursuant to Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. They contain numerous inaccuracies.
Section 702 is a provision of FISA that is designed to facilitate the acquisition of foreign intelligence information concerning non-U.S. persons located outside the United States. It cannot be used to intentionally target any U.S. citizen, any other U.S. person, or anyone located within the United States.
Activities authorized by Section 702 are subject to oversight by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the Executive Branch, and Congress. They involve extensive procedures, specifically approved by the court, to ensure that only non-U.S. persons outside the U.S. are targeted, and that minimize the acquisition, retention and dissemination of incidentally acquired information about U.S. persons.
Section 702 was recently reauthorized by Congress after extensive hearings and debate.
Information collected under this program is among the most important and valuable foreign intelligence information we collect, and is used to protect our nation from a wide variety of threats.
The unauthorized disclosure of information about this important and entirely legal program is reprehensible and risks important protections for the security of Americans.
Okay. Translation: hey, we're doing this because it's all totally legal! And that there are a lot of procedures to get stuff like this done so don't worry! And it's all a secret! And that revealing that we've had access to data from bigwig Internet companies is an awful thing to do! Basically, trust us to keep you safe even if it means we're completely untrustworthy. Ha.

Pokki For Windows 8

November is here and that means the weather is going to start getting a bit colder, chillier, and those pumpkins you got on your porch or doorsteps need to be disposed of before they rot and start smelling like doodie.
Talking about doodie, Microsoft has finally released its new Operating system "Windows 8" which are giving customers a new way to look at how the tablet and ios world operates, the problem is.."They are not to fond of the missing Start menu". So you're asking how do we fix that?

Iphone 5 Revealed

It seems someone managed to smuggle one out of a factory in Jincheng, China. Not just parts, but an entire unit.
The phone seems complete and booting. It stops just before showing the unlock screen with this error:
This device is not registered as part of the iPhone Developer Program. If you are a member of the program, please register your device in the @@url@@.
After all the leaks it seems highly unlikely that this is any kind of prank or fake—unless Apple has played the biggest deception operation since the Allies made the Nazis believe that Operation Overlord was happening in another place.

Just some proof of what you will see on Sept. 12

Yahoo Accounts Hacked and Exploided

Almost half a million Yahoo user accounts were compromised in a recent exploit. If you’re a current Yahoo service user or have an old account with a shared password on it, now’s the time to change it.

Ars Technica reports on the breech:
The dump, posted on a public website by a hacking collective known as D33Ds Company, said it penetrated the Yahoo subdomain using what’s known as a union-based SQL injection. The hacking technique preys on poorly secured web applications that don’t properly scrutinize text entered into search boxes and other user input fields. By injecting powerful database commands into them, attackers can trick back-end servers into dumping huge amounts of sensitive information.

To support their claim, the hackers posted what they said were the plaintext credentials for 453,492 Yahoo accounts, more than 2,700 database table or column names, and 298 MySQL variables, all of which they claim to have obtained in the exploit.

Remember to change your passwords today and protect your Emails and account information.

Stole $200,000 from a SIM Card

Kylie Monks, a 33-year-old Tasmanian woman, has been jailed for stealing a SIM card and using the hell out of it. How intense was it? Over a 3-month period, she racked up $193,187.43 (AUD) worth of data fees. Monks, to her credit, said she only used the SIM card to check Facebook and download a dozen movies.
That's insane! The Register says she stole the 3G SIM card from an electric meter

Yankees hit a leak

The New York Yankees accidentally distributed a file containing information on more than 20,000 season ticket accounts. The spreadsheet contains account numbers, names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, and was mistakenly sent to thousands of current clients.
The release of the spreadsheet can be traced to a simple mistake by a hapless Yankees season ticket rep, one wrong click revealing the team's records to all of his contacts. Monday morning, an account executive sent an email to nearly 2,000 clients, a regular informational newsletter that they receive

PS3 hacker case closed

Sony and GeoHot have officially settled their differences. A notice on the PlayStation Blog notes that Sony Computer Entertainment America and George Hotz have reached a settlement in the case. No monetary terms were mentioned.
In the statement, GeoHot says that he never intended to make piracy easier, and that he’s happy that this whole episode is behind him.
SCEA says much the same, while at the same time saying its motivation for the legal action was to “protect [its] intellectual property and [its] consumers.”
And thus we close the door on this sad chapter in history.

HUM..WHAT?

Humyo.com Offers
Unlimited Online File
Storage - Plus a Lot More!

I have been searching the net for a while to locate a company that offered unlimited online file storage for my clients and found this company. You can store all your files on this secure file hosting site. You can access them anywhere. You can share your files with other members and you can publish your files or media content using the Humyo media player to embed your videos or audio files to your blog, or webpage; for all to enjoy. Humyo does has a premium service for those who choose to use the extended services.

Why would you want to have an online storage service? Well, let me give you an example from my own personal experience. I have always saved my data, media, etc on a USB external hard drive. I even have stored my data on several external hard drives. Recently, my main computer's hard drive became corrupt and I had to transfer some of my most current data on my external hard drive. Well, my most important external hard drive ended up going bad at the same time. Lucky, for me a back up my data on two external hard drives and some CD's and USB memory Sticks. So, I was OK.

I learned a lesson from this experience. Since the cost to backup on line is free on many sites, its a prudent move to back up your data remotely, Think of all the people who lost their homes in the California fires in the last week. Can you image the amount of them that left their computers and important data, cd's etc. to become a victum of the fires. If they had used a remote backup solution, they would have saved all their important data.

From now on... I plan to you an online backup solution. This company is a great choice, in my opinion.

This company even offers an online mobile solution for retrieving files from your smart phone or hand held palm or windows mobiled device.

HACK LESSON

[Drew Endy]'s Programming DNA talk was by far the most interesting talk we saw at Chaos Communication Congress. No, DNA doesn't have much to do with computers, but he points out that hacking principles can be applied just the same. Right now engineers are reversing genetic code and compiling building blocks for creating completely arbitrary organisms. This talk was designed to bootstrap the hacking community so that we can start using and contributing standard biological parts to an open source collection of genetic functions.

Happy Marthin Luter King DAY

[Jose] sent in his efforts to build his USB Transferer. I'm pretty sure it's a gameboy flash cartridge interface based on the Atmel AT90USB647 AVR microcontroller. Once the prototype board came in, he soldered the controller, gutted an old gameboy for the cartridge connector and had the device showing up on his PC by the end of the day. Oddly, the card he's interfacing with is a USB device on it's own. Until a few more details are published, I'd assume that the interface would be useful for connecting to more than just that particular card.

A GOOD YOUTUBE VIDEO SAVER

Use A Firefox Extension to Download
Videos from YouTube.com
and Others for Free!

Many people recently, have asked me to show them how to download videos to their desktop from Youtube.com or other video sites. Using the following procedure, you can do it for free. When the file is downloaded it is a "Flash File" [.flv extension]. You may choose to convert it to a Windows Media Player format. I will provide the free software to do that, too.

First: You will need to download and install the FireFox Browser [a browser is just like windows Internet exploder. FireFox has its version] Click on this graphic:

Second: This browser has the ability to add extensions [extensions are like applications or functions that can be used within the FireFox browser]. So, you will want to add this extension to the browser. You can download the video down loader extension, by clicking on this graphic:

Once you download and install the extension you can make sure it works by going to Youtube.com and downloading one of the videos, you like. When you start the video you will want to look at the bar at the top of the browser. You will see this:

Next: Click on the little black "down arrow" [to the right of the 3 color balls] and you can select the file for download. It will start the process of downloading the file to your desktop.

SOFT MOD A XBOX NO MODCHIP REQUIRED

Have an old Xbox lying around collecting dust? Does your 360 scoff at its 1st generation counterpart and its inability to play Gears of War? Well put that thing to good use. Put Linux, or better yet, Xbox Media Center on it and create a low-powered media PC capable of receiving streamed content over your home network! An amazing mod that only requires a day or two, but is well worth it.

First thing's first, I didn't come up with this technique, and there is a good chance that if you don't know what you're doing, or you mess up in some way (hey, accidents happen) that you may end up losing your Xbox completely. You have been warned, do this at your own risk, if you mess up, its not my fault, or the fault of the person who thought of this.

Another thing to consider is the cost of this venture. If you already have an Xbox, it will cost around $45 in materials to put the mod onto the Xbox. Thats if you buy everything brand new, if you buy it used, you can probably get everything for $10ish.I am not going to explain step by step detail on the process, because I found out about it from this website:

  • Here is a list of the materials you will need:
    Microsoft Xbox ($150)

  • Networked PC Computer ($???)

  • Original MechAssault game ($20)

  • Datel Xbox Action Replay ($25)

  • Krayzie's NDURE installer ($0)

  • Xbox Media Center (XBMC) ($0)

  • uTorrent ($0)

  • FlashFXP ($0)

  • Winrar ($0)MechAssault is used to exploit the Xbox and load a different operating system onto the Xbox. You can also use 007: Agent Under Fire, and the original Splinter Cell.I'm not much of a cut and paster, and besides, I don't want to generalize on a very complicated process, so visit the Product wiki website and follow their instructions to the letter.

Remove DRM protection from iTunes tracks with iMovie HD

A few days back I found myself perusing the iTunes Music Storelooking for a few songs that I had heard via Sirius*. After completing the painless process of purchasing the songs, I immediately synced the tracks to my iPhone and went on my merry way. Because I had spent very little none of my time following the DRM vs. DRM-free music download optionbeing offered by Apple, I simply downloaded the $0.99 version(s).

DRM-free tracks from EMI will be offered at higher quality 256 kbps AAC encoding, resulting in audio quality indistinguishable from the original recording, for just $1.29 per song. In addition, iTunes customers will be able to easily upgrade their entire library of all previously purchased EMI content to the higher quality DRM-free versions for just 30 cents a song. iTunes will continue to offer its entire catalog, currently over five million songs, in the same versions as today—128 kbps AAC encoding with DRM—at the same price of 99 cents per song, alongside DRM-free higher quality versions when available.

Great. So Apple now offers DRM-free tracks from EMI as well as an option to upgrade existing DRM locked songs to their DRM-free variant for $1.29 or $0.30 respectively. Want to find out which songs are offered as DRM-free purchases? Open the iTunes Music Store and navigate through iTunes Plus.. Here you may find some of the songs you are looking for. You may also come to realize that songs you may want to download DRM-free are not available.

So what options do you have if the song you wish to purchase is not available? While you can always ask uncle Bittorrent,, possible run-ins with your ISP and the law may not sound all too enticing. The safest - and legal - route would be to purchase the songs through the iTunes Music Store. Personally, the rule that would allow an individual to authorize a track for playback on up to 5 machines is something I find acceptable for a digital medium which I purchased. Furthermore, I hate the fact that if I am signed out of the iTunes Music Store, I need to continue to keep a machine authorized or enter my Apple ID & password in order to listen to a song.
